Govt. not impressed with drugs distribution system.

Government has noted that the current distribution system for medical drugs and other medical requirements by the Medical Stores is ineffective.

Health deputy Minister Patrick Chikusu says Medical Stores need to improve on its distribution system to ensure that there are not facility stock-outs of essential drugs at public health institutions.

Dr. Chikusu says it is not right for Medical Stores to be waiting for a number of orders to increase before it can send a consignment of drugs to a particular institution.

He adds that there is need for the Medical Stores to come up with a flexible distribution system that will ensure that public health facilities in the country are stocked with drugs at all times.

Dr. Chikusu suggested that Medical Stores should consider coming up with regional stores that will be stocked with medical drugs for easy distribution.

He states that consistency in the stocking and provision of medical drugs and other requirements such as surgical gloves at health centers will help in improving the delivery of health services in the country.

Dr. Chikusu was speaking to QFM news in an interview.
