UNIP concerned with continued crimes against women

The United Independence Party (UNIP) has expressed concern at the increase of crime cases particularly involving women.

UNIP research and information officer Elina Nyirenda says fear has engulfed communities stating that the presence of police posts in communities is no longer an assurance of safety.

Mr. Nyirenda notes that police compliance with the law is one of the most important aspects of a democratic society but states that having the law itself is not sufficient.

She says what matters most is the effective implementation of the law.

Speaking to QFM, Ms. Nyirenda has called for increased effectiveness of punishment and the development of problem oriented policing if crime is to reduce in the country.

She says there is need for stiffer punishment on crime, especially against women, as it will make perpetrators of gender based violence think twice before taking anyone's life.
