Six perish in separate road traffic accidents

Police have disclosed that six people have died in separate Road Traffic accidents which occurred in Lusaka and Southern province respectively leaving 20 others injured.


Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Esther Katongo said of the five fatal accidents recorded, four happened in Lusaka of which three of them occurred on Kafue road.

Ms Katongo stated that in Lusaka's Chaisa compound, a boy aged three years died on the spot while three others aged one, three and seven were left with injuries when the driver of a Volvo truck registration number ALF 959 Silvester Mwale aged 30 of house number 11246/16 in Chaisa compound, reversed negligently hitting into a wall fence which fell on the victims who were playing around the yard.

In a press statement to QFM news, the Police Public Relations Officer explained that the accident happened around 08:00hours on an access road from Waleta road.

Ms Katongo stated that the body of the victim is lying in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) while the survivors who sustained injuries were admitted to UTH and later discharged.

In Livingstone one person died while 17 others sustained serious injuries as the Mitsubishi pickup registration number ABK 2663 they were traveling in overturned along Nakatindi road.

The deceased has been identified as Sylvester Nduwa 24, of house number 137 Namatama Extension.

The accident happened around 13:00hours when the driver Emmanuel Semba 30, of house number C4 Libuyu Compound lost control due to over speeding and overturned.

Ms Katongo said the body of the deceased is lying in Livingstone General Hospital Mortuary while the injured are admitted to the same Hospital.

On Kafue road near Misisi Compound, two unidentified people died on the spot after they were hit by a Toyota Corolla of unknown registration number which was being driven by an unknown driver who sped away after the accident.

The accident happened around 19:00 hrs when the two victims who were crossing the road were hit by the motor vehicle, while another person died on the spot also in a hit-and-run accident which occurred around 20:30hrs on Kafue road near Lotto building.

Ms Katongo said the driver of the unknown motor vehicle also did not stop after the accident and the body of the deceased is lying in UTH Mortuary.

And in a related development, a pedestrian identified as Lazarus Bwalya aged 27 of plot number 1023, Sangala Compound in Chilanga died on the spot when he was hit by an unregistered Toyota Noah driven by Ackim Mukwaila 38, of Sikanze police camp.

The Police spokesperson said the accident occurred near SGCC filling station around 21:00hrs as the pedestrian was crossing the road in the process hit by the motor vehicle and the body is lying in UTH mortuary.
all the accidents occurred on sunday.

Ms Katongo said as the Zambia police service is saddened by this development where numerous lives have been lost in a day and has since called on motorists to drive within regulated speed and respect other road users.
